Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2008 is the name of an operating system designed for Microsoft servers. It is the successor to Windows Server 2003, distributed to the public nearly five years earlier. Like Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 builds on the core Windows NT 6.0, and subsequently launched a second version, called Windows Server 2008 R2.

It was known as Windows Server “Longhorn” until May 16, 2007, when Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman, announced its official title (Windows Server 2008) during his keynote address at WinHEC. The Windows Aero is disabled and uses the classic interface of earlier versions of Windows.

Beta 1 of this Windows Server version 2008 was released on July 27, 2005. Beta 2 was announced and launched on May 23, 2006 at WinHEC 2006 and Beta 3 was released to the public on April 25, 2007. Its release was on the February 27, 2008.

There are some differences (some subtle, others less so) with respect to the architecture of the new Windows Server 2008, which may drastically change the way they are using this operating system. These changes affect the way it manages the system to the point where you can get to control the hardware more effectively, the better you can control remotely and radically change the security policy. Among the improvements that are included are:

  • New process of repairing NTFS systems: background process to repair damaged files.
  • Creation of user sessions in parallel: reduce waiting times at the Terminal Services and the creation of user sessions on a large scale.
  • Closing Services clean.
  • SMB2 file system: 30 to 40 times faster access to media servers.
  • Address Space Load Randomization (ASLR): malware protection for the load drivers in memory.
  • Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA) improved and standardized protocol error reporting.
  • Windows Server Virtualization: improvements in virtualization performance.
  • PowerShell: inclusion of an enhanced console GUI with support for administration.
  • Server Core: The core system has been renovated with many new improvements.

Windows Server Editions

Most editions of Windows Server 2008 are available in x86-64 (64 bit) and x86 (32 bits). Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based systems supporting IA-64 processors. IA-64 version is optimized for scenarios with high workloads and database servers and applications line of business (LOB). Thus it is not optimized for use as a file server or media server. Microsoft has announced that Windows Server 2008 will be the last server operating system available in 32 bits. Windows Server 2008 is available in editions below, similar to Windows Server 2003.

  • Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition (x86 and x86-64)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 All Editions (64Bit only)
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (x86 and x86-64)
  • Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition (x86 and x86-64)
  • Windows HPC Server 2008 (replaces Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003)

Service packs

Microsoft occasionally releases service packs for its Windows family of operating systems in order to fix bugs and add new features.

Service Pack 2

Because Windows Server 2008 builds on the core Windows NT 6.0 Service Pack 1, the final version (RTM) is considered as Service Pack 1, according to this, the first service pack is released will be called “Service Pack 2.” Announced on October 24, 2008, this service pack contains the same changes and improvements coming out the equivalent Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and the final version of Hyper-V (1.0) and improvements that allow 10% reduction in energy use.

Windows Server 2008 R2

Microsoft introduced Windows Server 2008 R2 at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) 2008 server as a variant of the new operating system Windows 7. A preliminary guide published by the company describes many areas for improvement, notably the inclusion of a number of new features including Live Migration Virtualization and Cluster Shared Volumes, low consumption of energy, a new set of management tools, new Active Directory features a “recycle bin” for deleted AD objects, a new version of IIS (7.5) that includes a new FTP server supports DNSSEC and the increasing number of processor cores from 64 to 256. The 32-bit processors are no longer supported.

Some improvements in the Server Core installation option includes the complete removal of the operating system’s graphical environment, and support .NET Framework, including ASP.NET applications and support for Windows PowerShell.

The performance improvements were a major development area in this release, Microsoft announced that it had done work to reduce the boot time, improve efficiency of operations E / S while reducing processing power and overall speed improvements storage devices, especially in iSCSI.

On January 7, 2009, we launched a preliminary version (beta) of Windows Server 2008 R2 to subscribers of programs from Microsoft, TechNet and MSDN, as well as participants from the Microsoft Connect program for Windows 7. Two days later, took to the general public through the Microsoft Download Center.
