Zeyus, the screen size of mobile phone will be always a drawback for compatibility, I have not came across with any mobile devices that can display graphics as we see in any OS.

I think a very important thing that people forget also is that people are becoming more mobile. For example, myself and some of my friends (including non-tech ones) are using the internet on their mobile. So it is well worth testing your page on a mobile browser.

When I have done some sites I've used pure CSS to format it which makes it pretty much 100% compatible (as long as the links are done nicely) only downside is on a mobile browser it doesn't look as pretty.

The above is also another reason to not have pages and pages of scrolling text.

I do agree that content is a very important part of a site. However for some sites, the graphics and design can be just as important. If the content is good and as such, people find you in search engines, that's great however if you're in a competitive industry and your website looks dull, drab and boring compared to your competitors then people are attracted to the better looking site. One fact I heard was people decide within 30 seconds whether to stay on your website or go elsewhere so the first image does matter.

Overall though, content, design and navigation all are key parts of a site but for search engines, content is key.
