What Is Virtual Hosting For Free Software (VHFFS)?

VHFFS (Virtual Hosting For Free Software) is a set of tools developed and used by TuxFamily, enabling the management of a platform for shared hosting. VHFFS provides users of the platform a user-friendly interface to manage the services they provide and administrators with tools to manage the platform and automate the most repetitive tasks.

VHFFS is designed to interface with key products in the field of mass hosting such as Apache, Exim, Subversion, and others.

VHFFS consists of three main parts: the API, the Panel, and Robots.

The API, piece of VHFFS provides an interface to access the database and manages access rights. It contains almost all of the code and provides the interfaces necessary for the coherence of different objects (a user, group, service, etc.).

The panel allows users and the management team to perform the tasks. Users can request a new group or a new service, add people to their group, configure the services … Administrators use it to list the applications to be moderated, modify an object, give more quota to a project or simply to obtain statistics on the platform.

The robots are launched at regular intervals by cron. They can call API functions on services via the modified panel allowing modification effective.

VHFFS is the only management software hosting platform to integrate the management of project groups. Users are grouped into projects and can work collaboratively on the same resources. The project can provide specific access rights to other members of the project or delegate the management of certain services.

VHFFS also allows complete isolation of users in the file system through a virtual file system using FUSE appointed VHFFS-FS. Finally, VHFFS is the only, or one of the few programs of its kind to offer both a web interface, a command line interface or via an IRC bot.
