Microsoft adding RSS Integration into next OS
Microsoft announced that their next major OS upgrade, currently codenamed Longhorn, will make the use of RSS feeds much easier for end users. RSS, or really simple syndication, is an exploding technology because of its ease of use for publishers, and usefulness to an end user who can subscribe or get updates from RSS feeds of their choosing.
Longhorn will give the user an icon over any RSS feed it encounters, allowing you to easily add it to your favorites list for future updates.
As new content is available to the RSS feed, you’ll get it sent to your RSS reader, much like you get email today. RSS brings the disparate web under the control of the end user and makes content distribution much simpler for publishers.
Microsoft’s move into fully supporting RSS is like them announcing they would have an SMTP client, now known as Outlook. RSS is another one of the exciting technologies that is enabling the web’s usefulness to grow exponentially faster. Email, search, syndication, publishing, and easily available to all online citizens. It’s exciting that Microsoft is making the move now and fully endorsing RSS at a time when it’s growth is surging.
