History of GNU General Public License
This license is used worldwide as a free software license; it was written by Richard Stallman for the use with programs released as part of the GNU project and was truly on the basis of unification of similar licenses for the initial version of the GNU Debugger, GNU Compiler Collection and GNU Emacs.
Their content was the same as the provisions to the modern GPL, but these were specific to each program rendering them incompatible.
This was release in 1989 with a goal of global aim of a similar license to all GNU projects.
In 1999, GPL version 2.1 was released in 1991 as a second license which was named as Lesser General Public License.
The latest version of GPL is in process along with two more contributors that is Eben Moglen and Software Freedom Law Center and it is set to release this October or early next year.
