Drupal Content Management System (Drupal-CMS)

Drupal Content Management System (Drupal-CMS)

 176x205

Drupal is an open source content management (CMS) developed in the programming language PHP and released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). CMS is a web software that makes it easy to create web pages and – whether or not focus on individual visitors – to show. Many modern CMSsen, including Drupal, provide a back-end interface for managing the content and design of their website without any programming knowledge to adapt.

Drupal will run on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and any other platform that the Apache web server (version 1.3 +), or IIS (version IIS5 +) and PHP (version 4.7.5 +) support. Because Drupal needs a database for content and settings, access to a database such as MySQL or PostgreSQL required. A detailed description of the system is available on the Drupal website.

The current version of Drupal is 6.13. Meanwhile Drupal version 7.0 is working (test versions are already available for download).
History

Drupal was originally developed by Dries Buytaert as a bulletin board system. It was in 2001 an open source project. Drupal is the English spelling of the English pronunciation of the Dutch word “drop”, which in turn in English is “drop” is. The name comes from the now no longer active website Drop.org. Buytaert wanted the site really “local” call, as a reference to the bulletin board system as a community, but he made a typing error in the control of the domain name and thought it sounded better.

Drupal’s Rising Popularity

The popularity of Drupal is increased over the years. From May 2006 to April 2007 Drupal was downloaded more than 600,000 times from the Drupal.org website. A large community now contributes to the development of Drupal.

In the Open Source CMS Award 2007 Drupal wins the “2007 Overall Open Source CMS Award. The competition rules states that a software only in the first category can be. In other categories Drupal finishes second, as “Best PHP Open Source CMS (after Joomla!) And” Best Open Source Social Networking CMS “(from WordPress).

In 2008, Drupal has become first in two categories: Open Source CMS Award Winner and Best PHP Based Open Source CMS. Unlike in 2007 was in 2008.

In 2009, Drupal won for the third time in a row a Webware 100 award in the category Social & Publishing.
