BitTorrent

Developed by Bram Cohen BitTorrent is a popular file sharing service that prevents peoples from downloading constantly unless they are willing to share in the overall transmission load on the network. BitTorrent breaks a file into clumps and distributes them among several participating users instead of downloading an entire file. When a torrent is downloaded, it is also uploaded to another user. As download & upload speed on broadband is not same, BitTorrent balances the load. BitTorrent has become widely used for transferring huge program files.

A growing number of individuals and organizations are using BitTorrent to distribute their own material. BitTorrent, like any other file transfer protocol, can be used to distribute files without the permission of the copyright holder. Released in 2001, BitTorrent is still under development and therefore may still acquire new features and other enhancements such as improved efficiency.

Web Seeding is the recently implemented feature of BitTorrent. This feature enables the site to distribute a torrent for a particular file or batch of files and make those files available for download from that same web server application.
