Using NoFollow Attribute

The NoFollow attribute came into existence to prevent spammers from gaining undue advantage by posting backlinks in discussion forums and blogs etc. In other words, a nofollow attribute is a necessity to overcome the problem of comment-spamming.

Prominence and usability of websites depends on incoming links to a large extent. Google is known to stress on incoming links as an important parameter which means that both quantity and quality of incoming links play crucial roles in Google’s algorithm.

Since high quality backlinks are difficult to come by - especially for a new website, webmasters look for ways to overcome this difficulty, often at a disadvantage to others.

Public forums became the first victim of link spamming. While discussion forums have their own way to deal with the problem, blogs lack that since most of them are mainly handled and managed by the efforts of one person, which is understandable because blogs are mostly referred to as personal online diaries.

Spamming with unwarranted comments by spammers whose sole purpose is to seek high search rankings by building backlinks to their sites became a big problem. Bloggers had to face the brunt of this onslaught. Often, indiscriminate spamming deters those who are willing to offer genuine comments.

The Solution

The solution has to originate in the site, that is the place where the link exists. So the NoFollow attribute also known as NoFollow Tag came into existence out of this necessity.

Apart from the nofollow attribute, there are other attributes, like for example, inserting rel=’vote-against’ within < a > tag, while others take alternate steps, such as creating captchas, requiring comment makers to register, pre-moderation of comments and so on.

NoFollow Attribute

The NoFollow attribute is one that has to be placed within an anchor tag, for example : < a xhref="anypage.htm" mce_href="anypage.htm" rel="nofollow" >click here< /a >. When the NoFollow attribute is inserted, it signals search engines to the effect that the outgoing link does not have approval for having appeared in the webpage. The NoFollow attribute is an indicator of undesirability of a hyperlink in the webpage in which it appears.

When Google sees the nofollow attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links don’t get any credit when Google ranks websites in their search results. This isn’t a negative vote for the site where the comment was posted, it’s just a way to make sure that spammers get no benefit from abusing public areas like blog comments, trackbacks, and referrer lists.

In other words, Google proposes to deny any benefit accumulating from a hyperlink that contains the nofollow attribute.

Increasingly it is felt that simply including the nofollow attribute will not be able to stop content-spamming. In fact, many blog programs automatically include the nofollow attribute in comment backlinks. But still spams are rampant.

One reason could be that content spammers make use of automated programs that allocate thousands of comments at the click of mouse targeted at vast multitude of blogs.

The second reason may be that spammers feel some links might just be clicked on and converted into sales. For them it is worth taking the chance. Also, who knows some blogs may still be unaware of the nofollow attribute.

Using 301 Redirects

301 redirects are as easy as a click of a button and very helpful when you want to protect your domain names.

Usually companies purchase multiple domain names to prevent their competitors from taking their .net or .org name. For example, if you already own www.yourwebsite.com, it is a good idea to also register www.yourwebsite.net and even www.yourwebsite.org. Some people even go so far as to register the misspellings of their domain name just to be sure that their competitors don’t grab it.

The problem is you don’t want to develop different sites on those domains and it is frowned upon by Google to have multiple web sites with identical content. So what do you do in such a scenario?

You can place a 301 redirect on your web site. This tells search engines where to find your preferred web site.

This helps because if someone types in say, www.YuorWebsite.com instead of www.YourWebsite.com which is the proper way to enter your web site address, the person who typed in www.YuorWebsite.com where the “o” and the “u” are inversed will automatically be redirected to the correct web site.

Using a 301 redirect doesn’t harm the site in the search engines and prevents you from having to develop multiple web sites with the same content which the search engines hate anyhow.

So now that you understand why you should use a 301 redirect, how do you go about putting one on your website?

Here are some simple ways to put a 301 redirect on your web site:

First and foremost, some people may recommend that you use a JavaScript meta refresh technique on your web site. This is not recommended because it is a technique used by spammers and you certainly wouldn’t want to follow in the footsteps of spammers.

If you are using a Linux server follow these steps:

* Go to the web site that you want to redirect from. For example, if you want to redirect www.websitenumber1.com to www.websitenumber2.com then put the following information in the root directory of the www.websitenumber1.com.

* Create an .htaccess file using the following code:

redirect 301 /the-directory-on-websitenumber1/the-page-on-websitenumber1.htm http://www.websitenumber2.com/

* Save the file as simply .htaccess

* Be sure you save the file in the root directory of your web site.

* Upload the file to your web server

* Test the file by going to your old web site address and be sure it redirects to your new web site

Please note however that the update will take about 24 hours to work.

If you are using a Windows server with. ASP pages then use the following code:

<%@ Language=VBScript %> < % Response.Status="301 Moved Permanently" Response.AddHeader "Location", " http://www.websitenumber2.com">

If you are using a Windows server with ASP.net then use this code:

private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { response.status = “301 moved permanently”; Response.AddHeader(”Location”,”http://www.websitenumber2.com”); } < /script>

Be sure that if using a Windows server with either .asp or ASP.net pages that you put the code before the tags on your page.

A 301 redirect will safely tell the search engines that your site websitenumber1.com and websitenumber2.com are the same as websitenumber1.com without wasting the search engines time and you can be sure that if someone accidentally enters in the wrong domain name, they will still end up at the correct website.

Mixing Blogging and SEO effectively

Search engine optimization is a constantly changing and transforming process that is controlled by Google, Yahoo, MSN and other major search engines. Our best hope is to try and learn the secrets to their algorithms and do best what we can to get our sites to the top of search engine rankings.

Many people assume that there are some strategies that will work best to optimize their site but in some cases those strategies will not count for as much as they think.

For example, everyone thinks that getting backlinks is the best to get their site on top of the search engine rankings. Although this is a strategy that still works, it’s one of the many factors to get the site’s rankings up. Backlinks are more important for Google Pagerank.

So what does this have to do with blogs. Blogs are very popular these days and hopefully their popularity will remain for many years to come. Blogs have the special ability to be pinged. This is a huge advantage because search engines will then notice the blog.

If this blog is attached to your site, you will gain one of the most important factors of having good search engine optimization which is quality original content. Everyone browsing on the Internet is looking for information on some or the other thing. Search engines know this and try to change their algorithm so that they can index the best sites on the top with the most quality content.

Blogs are not easy to write effectively. They have to be written keeping in mind the keywords you want. This is very hard to do because you are advertising your own site.

Another new tip that is also out there is that search engines found a way to make ‘triangle linking’ also known as three way linking more important. This means that you link to one site and the other site links to another site while that site links to you.

Another way is to network all your own blogs or your acquaintances’ blogs so that all the blogs have traffic flowing through all to all the others. This will create a large network of traffic and PR artificially boosting all of the blogs.

This can all be done by yourself, but it is time consuming and will cost more money to pay writers because no person can write about so many different topics every day.

Search engine optimization changes all the time. It is very important that you keep yourself updated about these new changes with what search engines expect from your site. You cant just expect that your site will be on the top of any search for too long if you do not keep up on the latest information.

Professional Web Design and Development

Web development incorporates all areas of creating a Website for the World Wide Web. This includes Web design (graphic design, XHTML, CSS, usability and semantics), programming, server administration, content management, marketing, testing and deployment. The term can also be used specifically to refer to the “back end”, that is, programming and server administration. There is usually more than one member that works on a given Web Development team, each specializing in his/her own field.

These days, almost everybody relies on the internet. Be it to communicate, shopping, or just for fun, people are fond of browsing the net. But most of these people don’t have the slightest idea on how hard it is to create, develop, and maintain a website. All they know is that if they find the site easy to navigate, or if it is easy to find what they are looking for, then they will visit it. But if your site is not user friendly, then it will remain without many visitors and also your site’s rank won’t improve

For a webmaster, it is very fulfilling to see his/her site getting good amount of traffic and rank improving. They have to think of different ways to promote their website and of course they have to update it at regular intervals so that people who visit their site get something new everytime they visit their site.

Managing a website professionally seems like a forever job. And if you’re not really into it, you might give up easily. Most webmasters will tell you that it is not really easy to maintain and develop websites especially if your products or the content of your website is common. What the webmaster usually does is that even if your website layout and content is generic, they make it appear like its unique and one of a kind.

If you’re a professional entrepreneur, your focus is to how you will sell the products and increase your earnings. One way of advertising your products and/or your company is through managing a website. But being busy will hinder you to maintain it. With this, chances are your product and your company will not be known to many people. If you are really concerned with the products you have and you want to sell it to people, use the internet effectively. You don’t need to go through all the troubles that maintaining a website has. There are lots of companies who offer services such as web design, web development, and the like. However you still need to set some criteria in choosing the best web development company for you, your products, and your company.

Internet Firewall and its Types

When you connect your PC to the Internet either through cable, dial-up, or DSL connection, anyone can invade your PC, and encroach, spoil and destroy content on your PC. To prevent this from happening you should have a Firewall installed on your PC. A firewall when installed acts as a barrier between your PC and the outside world. It prevents unwanted and unauthorized access to your PC over your Internet connection.

Firewalls come in two basic forms:

Hardware firewalls - Hardware firewalls are a piece of hardware, like a PC, that gets installed between your PC and your Internet connection. Literally, a cable from your cable or DSL modem gets connected to the hardware firewall. Another cable is connected from the hardware firewall to your PC. When done, the hardware firewall acts as a barrier between your PC and the Internet. It lets you get out to the Internet, but it does not allow unauthorized access from the Internet to your PC. Many cable, DSL, and wireless routers/switches have firewalls built into them.

Software firewalls - A software firewall serves the same purpose as a hardware firewall. It, however, is software that gets installed directly onto your PC. The software monitors all inbound and outbound Internet traffic, and creates a software barrier between the Internet port into your PC and everything else on your PC. Once installed, it lets you get out to the Internet, but it does not allow unauthorized access from the Internet to your PC. Software firewalls have an advantage in that they can implement rigid controls over what software installed on your PC will be allowed to access the Internet.

Many people use both a hardware firewall and a software firewall. It is similar to having a fence to protect access to your yard, and then a front door to protect access to your house. Everyone should use at least one firewall, hardware or software. If you have a laptop, you should use a software firewall. That way the firewall goes with you, wherever you go, protecting your PC.
